S.T.O.R.M. TEAM (Student Team Of Role Models)
WELCOME TO THE BEST OF THE BEST
If you are selected to be on our STORM Team it is the result of numerous meetings and discussions between your instructors to narrow the choices down to you, the best of the best. If you then accept a STORM Team position it is a big responsibility and should not be taken lightly.
We rely on our STORM Team to help us maintain our "Tradition of Excellence". Our goal is to provide the very best training for our students. This requires a motivated and talented STORM team. As part of the tradition and heritage of the martial arts, students have always assisted the instructor to maintain the quality and integrity of the school. We as students have always had the desire to teach and had the pride in our school to go the extra mile to insure our reputation as the best. You too must also have tremendous pride in our school and the desire to help others enjoy the benefits and excitement that we offer. Being a leader requires very special qualities. As a STORM Team member, your success will depend on your attitude and desire to help other students.

STORM TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES
General Responsibilities
The STORM Team was created to give qualified students the opportunity to develop leadership skills by assisting instructors in class. Responsibilities include greeting students before class and making new students feel welcome in the school, leading students in proper technique, and acting as "good will ambassadors" inside and outside of the school by exhibiting Black Belt Excellence, respect, self-discipline, and self-control at all times.
In effect, STORM Team members are apprentice instructors. You will be expected to learn teaching techniques and to assist instructors in class, from stretching and exercising to demonstrating proper technique to helping maintain a safe and friendly atmosphere.
A typical class would go something like this: Arrive 10 minutes before class begins. Greet students as they come in. Monitor them as the lobby fills. When the instructor brings the students in to the dojo, go in and help control the class. During stretching, wander among the students and offer encouragement where needed and gentle correction where needed. You may be asked to demonstrate a technique or certain move for the students. You may be asked to help with corrections.
At all times help the students remember the three rules of respect, self-discipline, and self-control. After class you might be asked to help a student with a move, put away equipment used in class, or just be in the lobby while the students depart.
The main focus of a STORM Team member is to help our students to achieve the best they can be!

Before Class and During Class
Five minutes before class you should be mingling with the students and making them feel welcome. Seek out the less excited and help them take their minds off the challenges of their day. Seek out the shy as well. Try to relax them and make them feel comfortable in their new environment. Not only does this show interest and caring but it gives you a great opportunity to follow up with some quality one on one by reviewing techniques they may be concerned with or struggled with on the exam. The students want to have fun with you so it's all right to joke a bit as long as things don't get silly. Class should be fun, not funny. A little fun works well, but we as leaders should never (as a joke) insult a student.
At the start of class all Storm members should stand in the corners of the dojo. During the class you will want to learn to read the instructor. If the instructor is teaching a technique, then with permission you should wander and correct as the students try to model the instructor. Do not ask for permission while he is demonstrating to the class, he or she will instruct you to wander. Remember you are there to help the instructor, not to socialize with each other.
Always position yourself so that the students can see you. If you have other Storm members with you, then one of you can work the front of the classroom and the other can work the back. Corrections while wandering should be brief and not commanding but suggesting. It is very important to allow someone to maintain his or her dignity when being corrected. This is not the place for power hungry egos! Remember, Storm Team members are to serve and help the students, not boss them around.
Be proactive. This means not waiting for a problem to occur but to anticipate potential problems and stopping them before they start.
After Class
Help the instructor to maintain order by escorting the students to the lobby. A pat on the back and some encouraging words go a long toward making the students feel good about themselves. You may be asked to work with a student briefly to help them with their material. TEN STORM TEAM TIPS FOR SUCCESS
(1)STORM Team member lead by example. Do not lean against the walls or use bad posture. The students look up to you and a good example by you will make them better students.
(2)Remember to be humble and do not show off. The point is not to show the students what you can do, but to help them develop their skill.
(3)Corrections should be brief and lead with a smile.
(4)It is very important to keep moving. Try and make contact (a gentle, guiding hand) with each student twice during class.
(5)Use high fives, but sparingly.
(6)Praise-Correct-Praise. Try to find something good to say followed by the correction and finish with another or the same positive comment. An example may be, " Joe, your sidekick is straight as an arrow now lets get that leg to a higher flamingo and you will have a black belt kick!" Give them a little pat and praise and move on.
(7)Never speak to a student while an instructor is speaking to the class. Never speak with other STORM members while the instructor is teaching class.
(8)Always support the school and it's efforts.
(9)Use your voice, body, and face! The students will mirror your mood. If you act bored, they will be bored. If you act excited, they will be excited. If you want enthusiasm from your class you have to give enthusiasm. When you want power from them, you put power into your voice and the words you use.
(10) Have fun!
STORM TEAM QUALITIES
Storm Team members should embody the very essence of the Three Rules of the school and Black Belt Excellence. In addition, the qualities of a good leader are; reliability, professionalism, ego less, humility, respectfulness, enthusiasm, energetic, observant, proactive, positive, helpful, and attentive.
YOUR CONTRIBUTION
Your high profile role as a STORM Team member is more like an instructor in training. All students will be looking up to you for leadership and guidance in the school when the instructors are caught up in other details.
Your role is also that of liaison for the students. Often students are more at ease with speaking to STORM members than a high-ranking black belt. Cultivate that rapport into relationships of trust and caring. You may have no idea how powerful your simple "Hello, nice to see you" comment is to a student.
Here is a chance for you to really make a difference for the better in peoples lives. By helping them to feel more comfortable at our school we as a team have a much better chance of getting them to believe in their potential. Once they understand their potential you will have helped them reach their goal of BLACK BELT!
